1.The in situ freezing treatment to kill intrinsic fibroblasts significantly increased the cross-sectional area of the semitendinosus and patellar tendons. The increase ratio to the control was significantly greater in the semitendinosus tendon than in the patellar tendon. The in situ freezing treatment significantly decreased the tensile strength and the tangent modulus of the semitendinosus and patellar tendons. The decrease ratio to the control was significantly less in the semitendinosus tendon than in the patellar tendon at 3 and 6 weeks, although it was significantly greater in the former than in the latter at 12 and 24 weeks. 2.(1) Regarding the in situ frozen semitendinosus tendon, complete stress shielding significantly increased the cross-sectional area into 227% at 2 weeks ; significantly decreased the tensile strengh (control value, 75.0MP_a) into 29.9 and 17.8MP_a at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively ; and significantly decreased the tangent modulus (control value, 710.8MP_a) int

o 425.9 and 278.1MPa at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively. Concerning the in situ frozen patellar tendon, complete stress shielding significantly increased the cross-sectional area into 167% at 2 weeks, respectively ; significantly decreased the tensile strengh (control valu, 59.5MP_a) into 14.2 and 9.8Mp_a at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively ; and significantly decreased the tangent modulus (control value, 1226MP_a) into 159 and 185MP_a at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively. 2.(2) Regarding the treated/control (T/C) ratio of the semitendinosus tendon was significantly greater than the patellar tendon at each period. The (T/C) ratio of the tangent modulus in the semitendinosus tendon was significantly greater than the that of the patellar tendon at each period. The T/Cratio of the tensile strength in semitendinosus tendon was significantly greater than the that of the patellar tendon at 1,2 and 3 weeks. 2.(3) This study demonstrated that the tissue dimension and the mechanical properties of the in situ forzen semitendinosus and patellar tendons change at a different velocity in stress-shielded environment.
