| Research Abstract |
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a secretory glycoprotein which has a single polypeptide chain with an asparagin N-Iinked sugar chain. The structural differences in carbohydrate of AFP_s have been elucidated in recent years. The carbohydrate structure of glycoproteins is considered to be tissue-specific or cell type-specific but there have been no reports on the differences of the carbohydrate structure of AFPs which were produced by histologically identical tumors in different tissues. In this study, we compared the lectin reactivity of AFP_s which were produced by histologically identical hepatoid adenocarcinomas in the stomach, ovary or uterus, and yolk sac tumors in the vagina or ovary. In the lectin affinity electrophoresis of hepatoid adenocarcinomas, the different lectin reactivities of AFP_s which originate from different primordial tissues might be detected. However, the vaginal yolk sac tumor indicated relatively similar electrophoresis patterns to the ovarian yolk sac tumors. Although this study's subjects are very rare diseases and the reported cases few, the results we obtained suggest that either the tumor heterogeneity or the tissue specificity is possibly involved in the lectin reactivity of the AFP sugar chain structure which is produced by hepatoid adenocarcinomas or yolk sac tumors of different tissues.
