Research Abstract |
Purpose : To clarify the time-related change of concavity in the posterior surface of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyle with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patinets. And also to predict and verify the morphological change of condyle by means of reporting new system of radiographic examination of TMJ using computerized database. Study design : First, 406 patients who were taken corrected lateral tomograms more than once. They were assessed the existence of concavity and its change compared between the first examination and second one or more. On the other hand, reporting system was constructed with database software. The item for prediction was prepared. Result : Among the 406 patients, 160 (19.7%) condyles revealed with concavity at the first examination. About half of them showed more extensive change in the follow-up images. And also having and indistinct margin were easy to change of shape. Three hundred and four examinations were recorded in this database for one year from January 1997. Among the 304 cases, 6 patients (12 condyles) were predicted about the morphological change of the condyle and verified by follow-up examination. Eight were corresponded with prediction, four were not. Conclusion : More examination of the patients and further study are needed to make clear the course of the morphological change of condyle with the passage of time.
