Research Abstract

Masticatory muscle activation pattern of temporomandibular disorders patients (TMDs) have not been clarified yet. The reason of this fact is not only that occlusal factor as occlusal contact differed with TMDs but also that tasks at registration of muscle activities differed with TMDs. In this research, the bite force magnitude and direction were restricted to define tasks. Under restriction of tasks, we search the relationship between jaw positions and masticatory muscle activities in normal subjects. Furthermore, we search the difference of activity pattern within locations of temporal muscle.
As a result, the relative activity pattern of the muscles during bites in a specific directions was consistent irrespective of jaw positions. However, masticatory muscle activities during bites in specific directions at a determined force differed with jaw positions. Masseter muscle activities increased as the jaw position was changed anteriorly. Anterior and posterior temporal muscle activities increased as the jaw position was changed posteriorly. Increased anterior and posterior temporal muscle activities as the jaw position was changed was remarkable at more posterior jaw positions than tapping position. That is to say, it was clarified that masticatory muscle activities varied from jaw positions.
Increased temporal muscle activity as the bite force direction was changed posteriorly and laterally was larger as location of muscle was posteriorly. In all muscle, there was specific direction that muscle activities was largest. This specific direction was situated posteriorly as location of muscle was posteriorly. That is to say, it was clarified that masticatory muscle activity pattern differed with locations of temporal muscle.
As for TMDs, it is often observed that jaw position is displaced and there is localization of palpation pain in a muscle. It is presumed the results in this research indicated one part of crisis process in temporomandibular disorders.
