Research Abstract |
Recent focus in dentistry is how to reconstruct of lost teeth. Most people lose their teeth with age and must use artificial prosthetics such as dentures and artificial tooth roots. However, conventional dentures and implants are not satisfactory regarding appropriate fit onto the surface of the oral tissue. Furthermore, we have problems due to sense of taste and biomechanical properties. To solve such problems, we started to investigate the hybrid-type apatite-collagen composites with the noble functions similar to biological tissues. In addition, we made apatite-collagen composite membranes, which can be adhered to both hard and soft tissues. These membranes were successfully insolubilized by UV-irradiation and had suitable mechanical properties. When they were implanted into rat or rabbit, no significant inflammation was observed, and the membranes showed good biocompatibility and adhesive properties.
