Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to tolally evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function.of mandibular prognathism patients by synovial fluid analysis, radiological examinations, and computerized jaw movement analysis. Synovial fluid (SF) from TMJs with asymptomatic mandibular prognathism patients showed significantly lower levels (76.7(]SY.+-。[)95.3 pg/100 ug of SF protein) of IL-1 beta than TMF internal derangement (ID) patients (330.1(]SY.+-。[)347.7 pg/100 ug of SF protein). SF IL-6 and IL-8 levels tended to be lower than those of ID.No deformities of TMJ components wererevealed in asymptomatic TMJs of all mandibular prognathism patients. Computerized jaw movement analysis system showed no emergence of TMJ cliking and/or crepitation after orthgnatic surgery in all saymtomatic TMJs preoperatively. In conclusion, SF of inflammatory mediators tended to be lower levels in the asymtomatic TMJs of mandibular prognathism with malocclsion than ID TMJs
