This research as a first phase to construct as life history and sociological theory of transforming gender analyzes its historical change in Japanese modernization process, from 1900's to 1990's ,depending upon the methods of fieldwork and semiformal interviews at fisherman's area in Tokushima. The mien findings are as follows; 1. There are three phases of conceptualizing gender, phase 1: gender roles, phase 2 : gender discrimination, phase 3 : Status of women and man. 2. Husbands (especially fisherman's) have "ie "ideology strongly, but they take care of their chilren and house keeping in daily life. 3. People who was born from 1920's to 1945 many women who badly wanted sons. In present-day, there are many parents who prefer a girl to boy for their first (and sometimes the only) child they have. Preference for girls in more evident among women than among man 4. Parents (especially fisherman's) are dedicated to the education to their children through very hard work. This report is not yet complete, it must include other arguments on such matters as the consideration of complicated structure.
