This study is to investigate the development of urban infrastructure in the modern day. Nagoya, the study area of this research has been one of the representative metropolitan area in Japan, and developed as the central city in Chubu region, central Japan. The foundation of metropolis was established in the later part of nineteen century. Road and railroad network developed with the increase of transportations between Nagoya and surrounding areas. Main routes of this network were on the old transportation network, so it may be said that the basic characteristic of main routes has not changed. Telephone and telegraph, main communication means introduced by the government, was used to develop social and economic activities by connecting Nagoya and other regions including Tokyo and Osaka. The demand of telephone has exceeded the supply, so it was not easy for people to have private telephones. The ownership of a telephone became an object of buying and selling. The telephone system in Nagoya was destroyed by war, so the communication means of this city became inability. The construction of new port was an important project for Nagoya, which had only a small port leading to the open sea then. Port construction enterprise got over many obstacles, and it was executed. Industrial activities especially export-oriented industries have developed greatly to use Nagoya Port afterword. Several additional construction have done to strengthen the function of this port, which lead to the regional development around Nagoya. It is clear from this study that the preparation of urban infrastructure became a fundamental condition for great advance of modern days Nagoya. It may also be said that the present metropolitan area succeeds to such infrastructure in order to get more development of social and economic activies.
