Research Abstract |
In 1997, we Japanese stuff held the conferences at Kyoto in May and at Tokyo in July, in the preparation for the symposium in U.S.A.And in September, we, Japanese and American stuff, opened the symposium at Columbia University and University of California, San Diego. We had the problems to examine the "Modern" of modern Japan by the sights of gender, nation, literature, science, disire and so on, and to call in question the framework of Japan, that was, to reexamine the framework of Japanese history as self history in Japan and Japanese studies as area study in America. We got much results in the above conferences and symposiums and faced the following problems. 1, The historical developments, as the history of sex, literature, science and the history of unification of people, culture, can not be settled in the framework of Japanese history. And also, the modern phenomenon of the expansion of the people-remove raises questions to the historical description on the assumption that people continue to live in the same country. 2, Through the studying about the history of japanese American and of Okinawan, we find the limit of the Japanese studies as rea study that has been divided from the American history. We have new problems by the discussion between Japanese and American stuff. We are much hopeful of these joint studies after next year.
