Research Abstract

Sudden infant death syndrome ( SIDS ) occurs during sleep and the most frequently at the age of 2 to 4 months . Its cause is not yet clarified , but the mechanism of SIDS is closely related to abnormal or immature neural regulation of cardiorespiratory system during sleep . The registration of SIDS starded in Japan , and the brains have been sent from all of the country . Our previous studies discloed a reactive astrogliosis , an increase of substance P , delayed development of synapse formation , a decrease of chatechoraminergic neurons in the brainstem . This decrease of chatechoraminergic neurons was found in the basal ganglia as well as the brainstem , and might be a predisposing factor for SIDS . In addition , serotonergic neurons were decreased in the respiratory centers of the brainstem , but serotonergic receptors were aqueductal gray of the midbrain which is an upper respiratory control center . The decreased serotonergic neurons and increased serotonergic receptors in periaqueductal gray were thought to be characteristic , and their network might be important in the pathogenesis of SIDS .
On the other hand , the collaboratory studies with Toronto and Sydney Universities progressed by visiting Prof. Becker in Toronto and Prof. Pamphlet in Sydney , and inviting Prof. Pamphlet to Japan who found an important connection of vertibular artery narrowing on prone position to brainstem gliosis .
