Research Abstract |
This project (Ocean Drilling Program) is an international program dedicated to study the dynamics of the earth interior and environment utilizing an ocean drilling vessel, JOIDES Resolution. Drilling of seafloor with core recovery, downhole logging and monitoring provide useful information of the nature of crust and mantle. Japanese participation on this project includes joint onboard collaboration work and site survey by R/V Hakuho-Maru. This year (Jan. 16 to March 16), KH98-1 cruise conducted 1500km long seismic reflection profiling, seismic refraction survey using 29 OBSs and 50 sonobuoy (US-Norway-Japan joint survey), IZANAGI sidescan sonar survey and gravity-magnetics-bathymetric survey of on the Ontong Java Plateau and Northern Solomon Trench. The results show new findings related to the nature of plateau crust, plateau-ocean floor transition and collisional process of plateau and formation of accretionary prism. Regrading ODP planning, Japanese participation on the executive committee, science committee and other panel meetings contributed significantly to the project performance.
