Research Abstract |
In this study, the educational systems of the two faculties, the Faculty of Arts, Victoria University of Technology and the Faculty of International Studies, Utsunomiya University were first investigated. At the Faculty of Arts, Victoria University, most full-time students are required to take three majors and two compulsory subjects, majors being groups of subjects which students have to take wholly or partly. At the Faculty of International Studies, Utsunomiya University, students are required to take compulsory subjects and elective subjects, which gives greater freedom for their study. Then the researchers tried to find their characteristics and problems to be solved. At Victoria University, the numbers of subjects students have to lean is restricted, which enables them to acquire deeper knowledge. The combination of lectures and tutorials, which realized in all subjects, helps students to study actively. Preparing for a presentation or a paper. At the same time, the restriction of subjects makes it difficult for students to acquire sufficient scope needed for a broad field like international studies. One solution seems to be the setting up of a new major for the field. On the other hand at Utsunomiya University students can select their subjects rather freely, which has a risk of acquiring only shallow knowledge, disregarding academic disciplines. In order to overcome this weakness, basic subjects like Cultural Anthropology and Comparative Culture can be strengthened by splitting them into smaller classes, and by being combined by their seminars which should be made compulsory. The time of taking Cultural Anthropology and Comparative Culture, and individual culture studies should be changed so that they are taken at different times. Finally Improved teaching plans of Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Culture, and British Cultural Studies were made.
