Research Abstract |
The ninety-nine national universities in Japan are differentiated into several types by size, resources and functions. The activities between national universities and communities are different according to these types. In this research we select seven national universities to investigate the partnership between a national university and local community. The main findings are following. (1) The activities of university professors to contribute to the local community are very high. Most professors are engaged in some regional activities, though the participant rates are very different among their fields. (2) The contribution of local leaders to national universities is low, compared with professors. However, in some fields, for example, medical and health fields, the contribution is very high. (3) Both professors and local leaders evaluate the contribution of national universities to local community. However, the local leaders request more contribution, in particular, to the local cultural development, adult education, and social care. Traditionally national universities have not been contributing to these fields. (4) Partnerships in the personal level between professors and local leaders are very active. University professors are utilizing resources in the community for their education and research. Local leaders are utilizing resources in the university. (5) Partnerships in the organizational level between national universities and local communities are low, though some national universities established the centers to contribute to local indust ries and lifelong education.
