Research Abstract |
In order to investigate the progressive failure of dense sand deposits, a series of seepage failure tests were carried. The experimental setup was made of inhomogeneous sand deposits with different initial conditions either side of the sheet pile. The findings of this study are summarized as follows. a) Constant loading rate tests show the effect of loading rate on failure and the difference in failure modes. The "high" loading rate that should give partially drained condition shows "high" critical head and large failure region, while "low" loading rate that gives drained condition shows "low" critical head and small failure region. b) When the water table was kept constant at the critical head under drained condition after a "high" loading rate, delayed failure occurred. Some sand deposits failed about two minutes after the loading stopped. Excess pore water pressure around the sheet pile rose with upheaval of sand. c) When the water table was kept constant below the critical head under drained condition after instant loading and unloading, it shows the effect of loading history of seepage force application on deformation and progressive failure. The excess pore water pressure around the sheet pile rose with upheaval of sand.
