Research Abstract |
We have prepared new supramolecular polymers containing cyclodextrins as ring components for polyrotaxanes. Polyethylene, polytetrahydrofran, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polyisobutylene, and polyesters have been used as axles for polyrotaxanes. Cyclodextrins have been found to form inclusion complexes not only with hydrophilic polymers but with hydrophobic polymers to give crystalline compounds. In the course of preparation of inclusion complexes of polymers with cyclodextrins, we found that cyclodextrins form complexes not only from aqueous solutions but without solvents. When polymers were mixed with dried cyclodextrin crystals at room temperature, the X-ray powder patterns showed changes from cage type to channel type, indicating that cyclodextrins form channels to accommodate polymer chains.
