Research Abstract |
[Objective] One could imagine that professionally highly satisfied individuals would provide better care for patients, but it is not well examined in the health care arena. There are not either enough findings regarding the analysis of professional job satisfaction on each professional group and on each management level. It is desired to grasp multidimensional aspects of professional job satisfaction and examine each dimension. The purpose of the study is to look into the internal structure of job satisfaction of health care professionals. [Subjects and Methods] The job satisfaction questionnaire was self-administered one that was already developed through qualitative and quantitative iterative methods. It presented multi-dimensional axes which compassed quality of care, relationship with patients, material resources, human resources, relationship with other workers, status, autonomy, respect, professional growth, private life and global job satisfaction. The questionnaire was delivered to the stratified sample of the staff of participant hospitals. The hospitals were sampled from all over Japan and three thousand responses were collected for analysis. [Results and Discussion] The questionnaire used was one already developed through extensive and deep content analysis, preparatory and field surveys, and its reliability and validity was psychometrically proved in this study also. The scales corresponding to each axis of multi-dimensional professional job satisfaction showed a distinct and unique profile of each hospital. A group in a higher managerial position tended to show a higher satisfaction score. The scales distinguished profiles of various professional groups, and they are different and unique from hospital to hospital.
