Research Abstract

An instrument, called Laser Speckle Flowgraphy (LSFG), has been developed to visualize the blood circulation of human retina in 2-D color coded map. In this research project we have developed the new LSFG system with the high performance and resolution. The joint work with Topcon Co. has allowed us the special version of the non-mydriatic retinal camera equipped with the diode-laser illuminator, area sensor unit and internal pointer driven by step motors. We have also studied a new area sensor device for higher sensitivity and resolution. To visualize the blood flow in the larger area of the optic nerve head, the software has been greatly improved to join one map to the neighboring ones automatically. Another useful function developed in this project is to visualize the map of the rate of fluctuating in the temporal variation of the blood flow. This function can be used for the diagnosis of the arteriosclerosis. Using the internal pointer, the observation of the blood flow in the fovea has become possible. Based on these researches and developments, the commercial type of the retinal LSFG system is now designed and produced, and will be available in the next Spring.
