Research Abstract |
The purpose of the present reseach was to develop a computer software supporting students' collaborative learning through the internet communication between distant classes. One of the major characteristics of the present research was that the system was made to support communication between the classes practicing Freinet type of education. C.Freinet (1896-1966) is a French educator who developed a child-centered educational method stressing children's activities such as writing free compositions, making albums displaying their works. Freinet also encouraged the publication of children's works, and exchanging works between different schools (called, "inter-school communication"). The Freinet type of learning seemed to fit quite well to the current educational practices using internet and multimedia tools. Thus the present research focuses on the way to support Freinet-type learning, such as writing free compositions, editing children's past works, and sending/receiving works between different classes of different schools through internet communication. The system also supports the mutual communication between different classes. The system was designed through the discussions among the researchers and school teachers (practicing the Freinet type of education) and programmed by software technologists at Recruit Research Center. Children's comments on earlier versions on the system were quite helpful for making the system more simple to use for elementary school children. The system was tested on its usability by experimental uses mainly between Hoya Elementary School and Sinno Elementary School. Later, a few more schools joined the experiments. In all cases, children excited on the use of the system for making their artistic works with pictures, exchanging the works between distant schools, and sending/receiving e-mails. Their activities on the Freinet type of learning were quite accelerated and produced excellent works by children's collaborative activities.
