Research Abstract |
The purpose of our research is to grasp the character and interrelationship of the Northern art of 15th and 16th centuries. Since the publication of the basic study, "Early Netherlandish Painting" by Erwin Panofsky in 1971, in Europe, the interest in Northern European art in the 15th and 16th centuries has increased and detailed studies have been published one after another, our research corresponds to this movement in Europe. The domains of the Northern art research group cover painting, printing, manuscripts, craft and architecture in the several Northern European countries : the Netherlands,Belgium,France,Germany and England. They make possible the study of the Northern art from many points of view. As a result of the research on the theme of description, which is one of the principles governing the Northern art through different materials and countries, the specific character of the Northern art and its interrelationship among different regions and among different media could be concretely shown. The result of our research will be published as an interim report of individual studies of the investigators. Many documents, slides and photographs which are difficult to get in Japan were procured from foreign libraries and museums, and are kept to help our future research.
