I conducted some interviews to internet users at Yamada Village, and a mail Survey in Yokohama City to examine the process of making friends through internet and its social impacts, and got these findings as below. (1) Internet users have more social networks which contain of many internet users than non-users. There is no difference between users and non-users in attitude to internet, desire for personal communication, innovativeness, age, gender, and education. (2) More internet users like to use e-mail and WWW than to subscribe to virtual communities. Especially, users like to read messages at electronic boards than to write messages. (3) Subscribers who like more reading messages than writing tend to use internet to get many information, and they judge trustworthiness of information through reputation made by other subscribers. Otherwise, Subscribers who like more writing messages tend to use internet to make interpersonal relationship in cyber, and they believe each other by norms making through exchange messages. (4) About 20% users make friends who met through internet. They present same friendliness to these internet friends as friends in every day life, but they tend to less communicate through telephone,. (5) Internet users tend to get social support from other users. Users who have troubles can recognize that many other people have troubles through reading messages, therefore they can protect their self-esteem and keep good well-being.
