Research Abstract |
This project was started with the examination of theoretical aspects of decolonization, as a result of which the historical meaning of decolonization as a process of large-scale change of international order came to be stressed. To study various cases of decolonization from this theoretical viewpoint leads to multi-faceted investigation of the relationship between the process of independence of colonized areas and the broad change in international system. In the course of this research project I published an article which dealt with the transformation in international relations in the twentieth century from this perspective. Another point which was emphasized in this research was that not only political decolonization but also long-term economic and cultural decolonization was crucial. My arguments about the cultural decolonization was developed in the book edited by me and published in 1998. I also conducted comparative researches between the British empire and other empires, especially the French and Japanese empires. My article which compares the British empire with the Japanese empire was published in a German historical journal, and invited detailed and favorable comments in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. This reception in Germany seems to show the validity of my perspective which I have adopted in conducting this research project.
