Research Abstract |
1. Several species of Propionibacterium produced bifidogenic growth stimulator (BGS), that is, 2-amino-3-carboxy- l, 4-naphthoquinone in culture broth. A bioassay system for BGS activity using Bifidobacterium longum as a test microorganism was established. 2. Propionibacterium freudenreichii preferred lactic acid to sugars such as lactose and glucose as a carbon source. Therefore, P.freudenreichii grew well in a co-culture of P.freudenreichii and B.adolescentis, where lactic acid was produced from glucose by B.adolescentis. 3. A novel bioreactor system with two fermentors and two microfiltration modules was developed for efficient production bifidobacterial cells by co-culture of P.freudenreichii and B.adolescentis as well as clarification of interactions between the two bacteria. 4. The proposed co-culture system allowed the successful exchange of culture medium between two fermentors. When P.freudenreichii and B.adolescentis were cultivated individually in the new co-culture system, the amount of bifidobacterial cells produced was twice as high as that with batch culture.
