Research Abstract

Comparative physio-chemical study on environmental tolerance of Corbicula japonica
Biochemical composition, Extractive components in the total tissues of brackish water clam Corbicula japonica were analyzed on the specimens collected monthly from January 1993 to November 1994 at Lake Shinji, Shimane Prefecture.
The seasonal variation throughout the year in the contents of moisture, protein, lipid is small, while that of glycogen is large. The content of glycogen was high from February to June.
The clam were rich in free amino acids, especially in alanine and glutamic acid. Most amino acids as well as extractive nitrogen did not show a marked seasonal variation. The increase in alanine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, and beta-alanine under hyperosmotic condition were noticeable in the soft bodies studied, suggesting that these nitrogenous components play a significant role in intracellular osmoregulation.
