Research Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of the polarized light therapy around the stellate ganglion in TMJ arthrosis by means of SUPERLIZER.Fourteen adult volunteers participated in the study. Tissue blood flow and skin temperature in the TMJ area were measured with ADVANCE FLOW METER ALF 21 and NIHON KODEN THERMOMETER after the polarized light therapy around the stellate ganglion. The therapy consisted of 2 sec pulse radiation (2 sec group) or 5 sec pulse radiation (5 sec group), and the duration of therapy was 5 min.
In the 2 sec group, tissue blood flow in the TMJ area increased by 5.5% just after, 17.8% after 10 min, 30.1% after 20 ruin, 24.7% after 30 min, 12.3% after 40 min of the polarized light therapy around the stellate ganglion, however, no changes in skin temperature were observed. In the 5 sec group, tissue blood flow increased by 19.0% just after, 22.8% after 10 ruin, 26.6% after 20 min, 20.3% after 30 min, 17.7% after 40 min of the therapy, and slight increases in skin temperature were observed.
The results of the study suggested that the polarized light therapy around the stellate ganglion with SUPERLIZER was useful for TMJ arthrosis, and 5 sec pulse therapy was more effective than 2 sec pulse therapy, although the maximum blood flow was more in the 2 sec group than in the 5 sec group.
