Research Abstract |
We studied biological clock function of diabetes mellitus (DM) model rats, Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETE) rats and streptozotocin administered (STZ) rats. Then, we got following results. (1) In light/dark cycle, the delay of onset on activity was obsereved in OLETF rats. (2) Spontaneous neuronal firing rhythm of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) was studied in OLETF rats and STZ rats. In diabetic OLETF rats, the amplitude of SCN firing rhythm was decreased. In STZ rats, the amplitude was not changed. (3) In young non-diabetic OLETF rats, the phase delay of SCN firing rhythm induced by glutamate application was decreased. On the other hand, same degree of the phase delay was observed. (4) Fos expression induced by dim light was decreased in young non-diabetic OLETF rats. Fos expression induced light of 300 lux was decreased in diabetic OLETF and STZ rats. These results suggest that entrainment function was decreased before the onset of diabetes in OLETF rats, and that the entrainment function was normal in STZ rats.
