Research Abstract

1. The sico-economic situation behind the multinucleation of the Metropilanta Area in Atlanta, Georgia, we approached. After the analysis of urban problems, ethnic and other social patterns in the area, we have the question to the Edge City Paradigm. The independence of suburbs closes the interrelationship between different soial group, and fix the polarized social structure in the spatial strucuture.
2. We made clear the intra-structure of suburban downtowns and new CBD.Offices are moving to big office towers because of their status. This trend makes the intra-structures more dispersed pattern supported by cars. It is a important facter in the growth types of metropolitan areas.
3. In Japan, new trends of 1990s in metrpolitan areas are clarified through the analysis of behavior pattern of life. The office workers in the Tokyo CBD have decreased for the first time. Commercial functuions of CBD) is stagnant and suburban shopping behaviors supported by automobiles are evidently increasing.
4. Economic connections in the suburban areas that we have found no so much before, are now increasing. Various kind of sunbuban accumulation appeared.
Conclusion : In Japan as well as US, we found the spatial structure supported by automobiles, dipersed structure. It is however overlapped and not clear by the concentric structure of central city and CBD supported by trains. The inrta-structure of CBD is also changing to dispersed pattern in Japan. Thsese inter-dependent structure is very important for the quality of life, but we should consider about the traffic mode in the view of environment.
