Research Abstract |
This research indicates how the young generation perceives Japanese culture and what kinds of images non-Japanese students have about Japanese culture through Internet. Its purpose is to enable users to understand more about Japanese and Japanese culture by looking up the home pages. These home pages were developed based upon the opinions of approximately two hundreds of Japanese and non-Japanese students. We have discussed, a lot of times on what kind of collaboration system we should create at each meeting. After going through numbers of discussions, we have finally designed the system as I have shown now. As for designing of the system like this, we took surveys with Japanese and non-Japanese students. Since the surveys were all essays, the opinions of students greatly varied. However, it is impossible to create pages for all the topics brought up, we selected three topics which had a lot of opinions ; Japanese flower arrangement, Kimono, and Japanese religion. Pages of these topics are in the process of completion. As for Japanese flower arrangement, we took advantage of the fact that professor Gunji is teaching it as a class in School of Art and put pictures of her and some of her students' masterpieces. For Kimono, we are planning to develop the page with the assistance of Kimono School. For religion, we asked an expert in the field to write a paper about it, and we inserted several pictures in it. Sumo, Japanese animation, and comics also popular topics, but there will be a problem with copyright. For this reason, it will be very difficult to create pages regarding these topics. Thus, we are hoping to make a link to the professional web sites somehow. Those pages are not in English all of the time, so we are searching the one both in English and Japanese.
