Research Abstract

This project deals with the suisei, a bank-like structure jutting out toward the center of a river from the riverbank, as a teaching material for Technology Education from the viewpoint of the technology integrating itself into nature.
Results are summarized as follows.
After the investigation by literature on suisei itself which is a traditional method of construction in river improvement, and on the history of technology used in suisei structure, and also after the field work investigation of suisei, a teaching plan for Technology Education is proposed from the viewpoint of the technology integrating itself into nature. The class based on this plan is carried out.
It is found that students could easily understand the fundamental structure of suisei and the effect of suisei through the experiment by a model of hydraulics. Through students' various investigative activity and also the presentation about suisei, they became to pay an attention to the construction used the natural materials and on the methods which are soft to nature from the viewpoint of technical aspect by means of comparing the river course executed by suisei structure with the river curse covered with concrete. Finally, they could notice the importance of the viewpoint of the technology integrating itself into nature.
