Research Abstract |
Relation between function and cognition of agent icons in three-dimensional virtual space was examined. Four design elements were concreatness, functionality, dimensionality and complicatedness. Agent icons were drawn under the design concepts about these design elements, and comprehensibility of these icons were examined. Moreover the evaluation experiment by the new measure of the mental distance between the icon pictures was carried out. Results from these experients a design guideline corresponding to each design element were shown. Furthermore, the icon that have relations among the four elements was designed, and an experiment was further done about their comprehensibility. Then, the design guideline of the high cognitive icons was proposed newly. Secondly, the experiment about the operation of the three-dimensional agent icons was done. Subjects were made to attach liquid crystal shutter red glasses. The globular icon presented on the screen. Subjects operated a three-dimensiona

l mouse with a degree of 6 freedom to point target icons. Results showed that the distance from cursor to the icon and operating time had positive relationship, and the size of icons effected to the operating time. These findings were also shown in a point operation character in the two-dimensional space. Minute point modification was seen frequently around the icon targets. However, the Fitts' law was concluded on the total operation of the 3D mouse. Thirdly, The estimation method of an icon position in the virtual space was examined. A distanced was from the cursor position to the target icons, and an agle a was defined as angle of the vector from a cursor position to a target position. An evaluation function by these parameter was defined. The coefficient of those parameters was changed, and an experiment was carried out. Proposed estimation method was superior to the ordinal method in operating time and correct hitting rate. However, it couldn't show which parameter of the angle and the distance contributed to the estimation strongly. Future work is to examine the estimation method centered in the operation model of the subject. Less
