Research Abstract

本研究は,国際深海掘削計画(ODP)第160次航海で東地中海から得られた海底堆積物を用いて,可視分光反射能特性を用いた古海洋変動の解析法を開発することを目的とし,平成9年〜平成10年度を通して,以下の4点の成果が得られた.
1. 分光反射能特性値は,海底堆積物の「色」を定量的に表現するのに適している.ODPなどで得られる100m規模の海底柱状コアの深度方向に連続的な堆積記録を編纂する際の強力かつ定量的な基礎データになり,数値データとして解析することも可能となる.
2. 測定条件による分光特性への影響など諸問題を検討した結果,以下の成果が得られた.
(1) 海底堆積物は採取後、特に400〜500nm波長領域では無視できない色変質が発生する.
(2) 分光反射特性は,試料の密度,孔隙率,含水率にがなり影響されるので測定条件を統一する必要性がある.
(3) 粉末状態で一定の厚さを保てるセルを用いれば測定誤差は無視できる.
(4) 測定条件が同じであれば,分析機器間の分光特性値は相関は極めて良い.一定の測定条件のもとでは,色の定量的な表現として非常に汎用性がある.
3. 化学組成との関係では,肉眼的に特徴的な黒・赤などの堆積物の色は,含有量とは簡単な相関関係にはない.たとえば含有量1%未満の赤鉄鋼の存在は肉眼的にかなりの赤みを示す.特定の波長の分光反射特性は,物理・化学特性の2次以上の関数であることが示唆され,海域毎,あるいは,特徴のある試料毎に基礎的な検討が今後必要である.
4. 分光反射能特性値を利用することによって,地中海域において過去530万年間にわたる,完全に連続した1万年単位での時間較正が可能となり,汎用性の高い高時間分解能の時間スケールの確立,および,モンスーン変動と関連した古海洋変動の定量的解析に適用できたことが,本研究の具体的成果である.
本研究と関連のある研究成果は,国際古海洋学会(1998年9月),日本地質学会第105回学術大会(1998年10月),東大海洋研究所古海洋シンポジウム(1998年12月),およびヨーロッパ地球科学連合(1999年3月)で発表された.
