Research Abstract

生体の持つ五感を越える高感度を持ち、あるいは生体が感ずることのできない情報(磁場、赤外線等)を検出可能な、“超五感センサ"。また脳機能の持つ、しなやかな情報処理、可塑性、適応学習機能を目指した“脳型メモリ"。これらの実現に向けて、単一機能ではなく、異なる幾つかの機能を調和・融合した、機能調和人工格子の開発を実施した。
特にメモリ機能を有する強誘電体および強磁性体を中心とし、可視および紫外に優れた光伝導機能を有する有機物や酸化物半導体等を原子・分子スケールで組み合わせた機能調和人工格子やヘテロ構造素子を創成した。これにより、外部からの情報(例えば光情報)が、双極子分極→格子歪み→スピン状態→電気伝導と、様々な物理量に形を変えて伝達する、新しい素子材料が可能となった。これは、生体機能が備える、信号認識→伝達→記憶に相当するものである。
具体的な研究成果の1つは、可視域に優れた吸収特性をもち、高効率な光伝導特性を有する有機物質(銅フタロシアニン:CuPc)と、大きな分極特性を持つ無機強誘電体(BaTiO_3)、さらに強磁性半導体である((La,Sr)MnO_3)のへテロ人工格子である。光照射により有機層の実効的な抵抗が減少することにより、強誘電体中の残留分極特性が変化する。強誘電体層は、トランジスタ構造のゲート部を担っているため、この変化に対応して強磁性半導体の電気伝導性が、電解効果により変化する。このようにして、光の情報を双極子分極情報として蓄え、伝導性変化の情報として取り出す、という光→分極→伝導の伝達が可能であることを示すことができた。
これは光情報が直接分極情報として蓄えられたことを意味しており、熱による相転移現象を利用していた従来のMO(光磁気)ディスクに対して、本素子は文字通り、直接型光メモリの初めての例であといえる。
