Research Abstract |
The morphology of seedlings of Japanese trees was studied. Several types of seedling morphology have been reported and many of them were known only from tropical and/or subtropical regions. Thus, in this study, field survey was concentrated to subtropical region such as the Ryukyu Islands to obtain new seed materials and spontaneous seedlings and to observe ecology of them. Unfortunately, from 1997 through 1999, the number of species and individuals bearing fruits or seeds were not so high as in usual years, but we collected about 70 tree species and obtained more than 30 species of seedlings germinated in nursery by cultivation. Several families we could have obtained the seedlings good condition such as Trochodendraceae, Eupteleaceae, Cecidiphyllaceae, Hippocastanaceae, Flacourtiaceae and Caprifoliaceae, were studied first in detail. Trochodendraceae, Eupte-leaceae and Cercidiphyllaceae, the endemic families to E Asia, have epigeal and phanero-cotlar seedlings referable to Macaranga type by de Vogel. In Elaeagnaceae, Tiliaceae and Caprifoliaceae, the characteristic hairs to each family were observed from the early stage of development of seedlings. Among the seedlings newly obtained from subtropical regions, drawings with anatomy and morphology in detail were prepared for Barringtonia racemosa, Calophyllum inophyllum, Cerbera manghas, Heritiera littoralis, Hernandia nymphaeifolia, and Kandelia candel. As far we collected the seedlings from about 550 tree species. For these species we have started the analyses from the viewpoint of taxono-my and morphology preparing descriptions, drawings and pictures obtained using image scanner. The result will be published in a book.
