Research Abstract

現代天文学の進展は、観測技術・観測機器の改良とスペース望遠鏡や大型望遠鏡の活躍によって目覚ましいものがある。しかし、天文学の一つの宿命は、様々な宇宙現象を実験的手段によって解析不可能であることである。宇宙の創世、銀河・星・惑星系の形成、ブラックホールの生成などの過程をいくつかの初期条件や環境効果(境界条件)を変えて解析することは不可能である。ところが、最近の超高速計算機の進展によって、基本方程式をプログラム化して、様々な初期条件や境界条件を与えることで、複雑な天体現象を解析することが可能となった(数値学的宇宙物理学)。天文学における唯一の実験的手段としての超高速計算機によるシミュレーションは、現代天文学においてますます重要性が高まっている。
このような天文学における現状をもとに、国際シンポジウム「数値的宇宙物理学」が日本で平成10年に開催される予定である。この会議は、数値的宇宙物理学の世界的権威や活動的研究者を招待して、(1)新しい数値計算法の検討、(2)並列・ベクトル型スーパーコンピューターのための計算手法の検討、(3)専用計算機の新たな活用、(4)シミュレーション結果の提示と観測データとの比較等を目的としている。本申請研究では、国際シンポジウムの主催者である代表者が、国内の組織メンバーを研究班に加えて、この国際会議に向けて、国際会議の内容面に関する企画と、国内の研究者の有機的な連携の下に国際会議における研究面での準備を行うことを実行した。特に、国立天文台にスーパーコンピューターが平成8年に導入されたことも契機として、「数値的宇宙物理学」分野での研究が、国内で研究会を開き成果報告を実行してシンポジウムの準備会を開催した。
