Research Abstract

本研究では「群れで生活する他の霊長類と比べて、より遠くにいる他個体のおかれた状況や他個体の意図を理解する為に、オランウータンは高い認知能力を用いている」という申請者が着想した新たな仮説を検証することが目的である。
本年度は現地での調査許可の更新の為、平成23年4～5月に10日間、マレーシアに渡航するとともに、果実季(平成23年8月)および非果実季(平成24年10月、平成25年2月および平成25年3月)に計4回、38日間マレーシアに渡航し、マレーシア国サバ州のダナムバレー森林保護区において、フィールドワークに従事した。フィールドワークは、2名の調査補助者と研究者で1組の追跡チームを編成し、熱帯雨林の中で野生のオランウータン追跡し、行動観察の記録とGPSデータを収集した。またオランウータンの行動に影響を与える生態学的な要因として、地域の果実生産量を調べるために、落下果実を拾って結実した木の本数と種類を定量的に測定する「落下果実センサス」を調査補助者が毎月行い、資料を収集した。
マレーシアでフィールドワークをしている期間以外は、日本において、今まで収集した行動観察記録、写真や映像、およびGPSデータの整理、入力、分析を作業をすすめた。今まで主に現地で使用していたノートパソコンが壊れた為、今年度新たに1台ノートパソコンを購入した。また収集した資料の整理とパソコンへの入力作業のために、謝金を支払って調査補助者を日本国内において雇用した。
