Research Abstract

Systematics and biogeography of Chinese and Korean bitterlings were studied. In 1998, we went to Shanghai City, Heilongjian and Fujian Provinces in China, and Kyonggi Province in Korea, where we studied classification, karyotypes and collected samples for DNA experiments, with Chinese and Korean investigators. In 1999, we went to Shanghai City, Anhui and Zhejiang Provinces in China, and Kyonggi, Kangwon, Chungchongbuk, Chungchongnam, Kyongsangbuk, Kyongsangnam, Chollabuk, Chollanam Provinces in Korea.
As the results of the Expedition from 1998 to 1999, following points were found : 1) Bitterlings of 2 genera, 12 species-subspecies in China and 3 genera, 13 species-subspecies in Korea were collected. 2) Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus and Acheilognathus sp. were collected for the first time in Heilongjian Province. 3) R. sp. collected from Namhan River system in Korea is similar to R. sericeus, but is different from R. sericeus by strong simple rays of dorsal and anal fins and nuptial color … More of males, and morphology of the anteriormost part of the yolk-sac of the newly hatched larva. They had the same chromosomal number, 2n=48, but might be different in the C- and the Ag-band patterns. 4) A bitterling having 2n=46 was found for the fienst time in Fujian Province. 5) The karyotype change from 2n=48 to 2n=46 in Rhodeus might have been caused by the inversion and the tandem fusion. 6) The clear karyotype of Tanakia signifer is the first report. It had a few acrocentric chromosome paris. This may be a characteristic in Tanakia. 7) A highly repetitive DNA family with partially tandem and partially interspersed elements was isolated from two subspecies of Chinese bitterlings R. atremius suigensis and R. ocellatus ocellatus. This repetitive family may be a useful landmark for future chromosomal studies. 8) According to the RFLP analysis of mtDNA in R. ocellatus from China, Korea and Japan, it seems that Japanese R. ocellatus introduced from mainland China shows polyphyly and some lines are distributed in China.
