Research Abstract |
Each crop group went to the following collection and investigation trips. 1. Rice group : In 1998, we entered into Yunnan in China and went through Laos. In the trip, we collected primitive rice cultivars with other crops and vegetables which were cultivated in respective fields. Wild rice strain could not be found. All collections were upland cultivars from slash-burn fields. Secondary year, our member entered in Guangxi in south China. And another member joined together at north Vietnam. Several rice cultivars were collected along the trip. Then, these members have been central Vietnam in mountain areas and seen primitive upland rice cultivars. Next we have seen central Laos and collected wild and cultivated rice cultivars. 2. Barley and wheat group : A survey trip for research and collection was carried out in Sichuan Province co-operating with Sichuan Agricultural Univ. in 1998. Almost all the purposes expected were satisfied though the extraordinally heavy rainfall and flood destroy

ed roads and forced us to change our scheduled plan and route. Research surveys in 1999 were successfully made in Nepal and Bhutan with collaboratory researchers of Tribuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal, which aimed to get plant materials and informations were collected in the north-western district and the central area of Yunnan Province with co-workers in Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. They will provide us with so far lacking knowledge on barley and wheat in this area. 3. Soybean group : Genetic diversity and agricultural features of soybean landraces in southern China, Indonesia and Nepal were examined for tow years. The special interest was taken in the landraces which have been cultivated by minorities such as "Miao", "Dong", "Hani" and "Dai", who are living mainly in hilly regions of southern China. In addition, distribution and ecological features of wild soybeans were explored in the river basin of the Yalujian River which is running along the North Korean border. Less
