Research Abstract |
Field studies in Paraguay were carried out to three times by 1999 since 1998, involving survey of medicinal plants for Guarany indian. In the herb market of Asuncion city, about 100 kinds of herbs were always sold, almost which are for tonics, digestive, and a diuretic. The following were also examined by hearing from about 700 persons : well utilizing herb, purpose, and does method. In utilizing herbs with high frequency, some were not from the herb market, but original route. The almost purposes were of tonics, digestive, and almost persons take the medicinal herb as a tea or as "Terere" peculiar to Paraguay. the area where medicinal herbs grow naturally in Paraguay was studied. Total 80 kinds of wild herbs were found in the north and south area, and the nature of plants growing in the north area, Haye and Chaco prefectures, were very different form those growing in the south area, Paraguari, Itapua, and Caaguazu prefectures, because of climatic factor. At the same time, the **ndard plants were collected. Herbs and Indians in the South America were investigated at CEFYBO (Centro de Estudios Farmacologicos y Botanicos), Buenos Aires, Argentine and at the La Plata University, La Plata, Argentine. It was found the literature which recorded the life of Guarany indian at the beginning of 1900. About 176 kinds of medicinal plants were recorded in the literature, along with animal drugs. These medicinal plants were analyzed. It was indicated that the utilizing purposes of some herbs at the time were different from those in the present time. The changes will be important to analyze the medicinal idea of Guarany indian.
