Research Abstract |
In the highlands provinces of Papua New Guinea (PNG) a very high incidence of subacute scierosing-panencephalitis (SSPE) was reported by Karren Lucas et al. in 1993 We registered 34 new SSPE cases at Goroka Base Hospital, Eastern Highlands Province, during a period of 1 year and 7 months from 1997 through 1998. We estimated the annual incidence of SSPE per one million populations below 15 years to be 27 for the whole PNG, 78 for four highlands and two coastal provinces, and 123 for Goroka District. These incidence rates are all higher than 0.57 for Japan and 14 for Karachi, thereby confirming a continuing high incidence of SSPE in 1997 and 1998. We came to know the following four points. (1) Ca. 80% of SSPE patients had been vaccinated against measles prior to the development of SSPE.(2) Ca. 70% of SSPE patients got measles below 2 years and Ca. 50% below 1 year. (3) The median value of incubation period for SSPE was 5 years (4) The median value of the age at SSPE onset was 6-7 years with a peak at 5 years. Therefore the SSPE in Goroka features a peculiar
