Research Abstract |
The substantial results of our research work in 1998-2000 are published in its final report. Here we put its outline, according to our original purpose and research plan. The purpose of our research is to search the possibilities of a new Aesthetics as the science of sensibility and find its significance and limitation in our chaotic contemporary times. Its aim and end is to restore the holistic human science, which does not exclude human sensibility, through the critical reexamination of logocentric tendency pervading the academism in general, let alone philosophy and the human sciences and of positivism as its corollary. This kind of research should be inevitably divided into two directions, i.e., (I) general theoretical researches and (II) special studies in individual applied areas. So, in our final report, we classified 19 papers of all investigators into two sections. We also subdivided the first section into two parts and the second one into five. (I) The First Section : Part 1.No.
… More
1-4 discuss the general problem of sensibility. Among these, No.3 and 4 inquire earlier theories of it, and No.1 and 2 pursue its novel possibilities, respectively offering new observations. Part 2.No.5-7 reexamine the traditional Aesthetics as a human science from the critical standpoint, each prospecting the possibilities of a new science of human sensibility. (II) The Second Section : Special studies in individual fields. For the most part (No.8-15) the sense of sight is their main subject. Every discussion tries to make clear the nature of the sight from dynamic points of view, each presenting observations in forefront of the theory of vision and visuality. No.16 and 17 discuss the auditory sense, in relation to the music performance, anticipating future aspects of our research. No.18 and 19 give another prospect of our research, showing that it can be oriented to Japanese traditional culture too. As mentioned in the foreword of our published final report, we are expecting further developments of these studies in the future. Less
