Research Abstract |
This study takes over the previous research project entitled "Etiology of Learning Difficulties and School Adjustment in High Risk Children for Learning Disabilities (No.07309014, 1995-97)". The two studies focus on the high risk children for learning disabilities (LD) and then overlap partially in terms of the subjects of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants and of children who completed the therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The final report consisted of 3 parts. In Section 1, we discussed theoretical issues concerning high-risk children for LD, i.e., basic concepts of LD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), developmental language disorders and high-functioning autism. Andalso, we described the actual support system for childrenwith LD frommedical points of view, and our follow-up procedures and support system for VLBW children in Section 1. The title of Section 2 was clinical features of high-risk children for LD. We pointed out that large amount of neurologically normal VLBW children showed the four disorders; ADHD, LD, developmental coordination disorder and febrile convulsions. Section 2 also included two papers concerning cognitive function of the ALL children above-mentioned. A comparative study between Australia and Japan was conducted in cooperation with two Australian professionals (j.Bailey and L.Graham). The title of this study in Section 3 was "Attitudes to and perceptions of students with ADHD: A comparative study of Australian and Japanese teachers".
