Research Abstract |
Damages by pest insects or fungi are very important problems in the field of conservation of cultural objects. Until recently, fumigation of whole buildings or storages has been very common in our country. However, cultural use of methyl bromide, a very effective fumigant, will be banned at the end of 2004 in developed countries. In this situation, effective preventive measure and alternative methods are urgently in demand. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a cost effective preventive measure of pests, and recently it has been applied in cultural institutions such as museums in Europe and North America. In Japan, it is necessary to introduce appropriate IPM relevant to our situations. Therefore, we practically developed some examples of IPM programs in our country, which would be some model cases. At the same time, we have been worked on alternative methods of conventional fumigation with methyl bromide, such as low oxygen, carbon dioxide and thermal treatments. We presented the results in academic meetings and also some journals. We also edited " Cyclopedia of Japanese Museum Insects" to facilitate identification by staff for promotion of IPM in museums. It contains illustrations of museum insects in actual sizes, many pictures of damages, descriptions of characteristics of each insect, controlling measures and summary of methods of pest management and treatments in museums. We also conducted some training courses of pest management for conservators or curators in our country.
