Research Abstract

The authors hypothesized that the information processing behavior of organisms would not only depend upon the external stimulus information given at the particular time, but also upon active, information-taking-in operations of organisms, and that the information processing behavior would be formed through interactional processes of these external and internal factors, using the information/knowledge stored in the organisms. The authors also hypothesized that sign-/signal-systems of organisms could be constructed under the interactional processes, Under the above-mentioned framework, this study was to analyze experimentally some conditions of the organization and disorganization in the information processing behavior, relating to the function of sign-/signal-systems.
A series of experiments on memory in the emotionally stressful situations were conducted. The results showed arousal level affected function of sign-/signal systems under certain situations.
In the studies on the formation o … More f Generalized Event Representation (GER), it was suggested that even 4-and-5-year-old children could form GER by describing events in the present tense without reference to the subject.
Visual cognitive processes for various figures under conditions of limited visual field were examined in the experiments employing normal adults. It was found that the cognitive processes were affected by active strategies of subjects.
A series of experiments using speech sounds and non-verbal sounds for a brain-damaged patient was made. The followings were clarified. Although this patient preserved fairly good ability to perceive monosyllables, he had remarkable difficulties in perceiving syllable sequences. His disorders may be due to the lowered rate of processing as well as the memory load for holding processes of preceding syllables imposed on the following phonological processing. Moreover, his ability of temporal resolution was normal, but his ability of pattern discrimination was defective. This deficit may be related to the disorders of sign-/signal activities. Less
