Research Abstract

The microvascular arteriovenous (A-V) shunt was made on the thigh of the male Wistar rats to modify blood flow. Granulation tissues were formed surrounding the A-V shunt wrapped with artifical skin dermis (ASD). A similar control dissection of these vessels was done but no shunt created.
The vascular structure was observed by the following methods ; (1) Histologic examinations (2) Microangiography (3) Three dimentional observation of vascular casts with a stereo zooming microscope. In addition, the total vascular volume was calculated from measuring weight of vascular casts.
In high blood flow group, shear stress calculated from blood flow and vessel diameter was significantly increased. Scanning electron microscopic observation showed many holes in vessel lumen in both artery and vein, suggesting that new vessels sprout from the loop. There was an increase in the volume of the neovascular around the A-V shunt loop day by day. Total volume of new vessels was four times as great as control.
