Research Abstract |
We have developed a new portable monitoring system for home assessment of sleep apnea and hypopnea. This device assesses three kinds of parameters : nasal airflow by thermistors, tracheal sound by microphone and arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximeter(SpO2). In this new system, there are multiple parameters that indicate the degree of sleep disordered breathing. Reviewing the raw recordings of the absence of oronasal flow, absence of tracheal sound, puls rate, respiratory rate and SpO2, we could distinguish apnea episodes, desaturation episodes and apnea episodes with desaturation. An apnea episode was determined as a cessation of oronasal flow and/or a cessation of tracheal sound more than a certain duration chosen manually. A desaturation episode was construed as a set of SpO2 points decreasing continuously for more than a certain duration and degree. The mean value and distribution of some parameters, such as SpO2, nadir SpO2 during a desaturation episode, are available on demand. We can easily operate this system, and persons besides specialists such as the patient or patient's family can easily operate the new portable monitoring system. This system was developed on a commercial basis. We believe that this system will contribute to the progress of sleep studies.
