Research Abstract

In this research project, I investigated the relation between R. F. Harrod and J. R. Hicks, in the developments of the economic dynamics. Materials I used are, "Sir John Hicks collection" owned by The Attached Library of Kobe University of Commerce, "The Papers of Sir Roy Harrod" owned by The Attached Library of Chiba University of Commerce, "John Maynard Keynes and Roy Harrod : Letters & Memoranda" owned by The Attached Library of the Faculty of Economics in Tokyo University, and "Roy Harrod Collection" owned by The Central Information Center of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business Administration.
The main subjects and the research results in this project are as follows.
1. Research of the differences and the relation of definitions of economic statics and economic dynamics between Harrod and Hicks. Harrod defined economic statics and economic dynamics from about 1936. Hicks presented his definition of economic statics and economic dynamics different from Harrod's definition, in his Value and Capital (1939). But Hick's definition changed by the influence of Harrod afterwards.
2. Research of the differences and the relation of definition of the character of technological progress between Harrod and Hicks. Hicks defined the character of invention (technological progress) in The Theory of Wages (1932). Harrod criticized this Hicks's definition, and presented his own definition. I researched the differences and relation in the lines of thinking of Harrod and Hicks in this problem, by utilization of the correspondences between Harrod and Hicks.
I will continue the research of other two subjects. These are, research of the differences and the relation of analyses of economic growth and trade cycles between Harrod and Hicks, and research of the causal relation between Hick's turnabout in economics and Harrod's economic dynamics.
