Research Abstract |
A well ordered organic monolayer was prepared by the self-organization of a linear diamide, 4,4'-(1,4-phenylenethynylene)di(benzamide), on a graphite surface under ultrahigh vacuum, and was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy(STM). 1,3,5-Tri(4-carboxyphenylethylenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene was also synthesized because the acid was expected to make a supramolecular network tied with hydrogen bonds three-directionally. These molecules were designed to be planar molecules having π-electronic systems tied with acetylene units so as to fit on a graphite surface, and were synthesized from the corresponding arylhalides and terminal acetylene derivatives using bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) dichloride-CuI catalyst in triethylamine.
