Research Abstract |
In 1998, we obtained following results : (1)cell groups with strong immunoreactivity to anti- serotonin antibody were found in the para-ventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus in Japanese quail. The number of immunopositive cells was greater in light than in darkness. Confocal razar microscopy revealed that these cells extend processes perpendicular to the third ventricle and connect each other. (2)Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) immunopositive cells were found at the ventral area of the para-ventricular nucleus. These cells extend fibers parallel to the third ventricle and were suggested to connect with serotonin immunopositive cells. In 1999, following results were obtained : (1)The antibody against the toad rhodopsin stained the suprachiasmatic nucleus and preoptic nucleus. (2)This antibody also stained the exocrine glands in the head skin. (3)Fluorescence method with formaldehyde revealed a possibility of existence of retinal in these areas. (4)Action spectrum experiments with using a large spectrograph revealed that pinopsin is the possible photo-pigment involved in photo-suppression of melatonin production in the pineal
