Research Abstract

This research deals with the construction of the linear actuator systems with high function using ERF (Electro-Rheological Fluid) or ECF (Electro-Conjugate Fluid). These actuator systems are driven by a photo-electric source based on the new concept.
1. Developments of photo-electric source and its drive : A PLZT Element is used as a photo-electric source. The effect of the size of a PLZT element on the performance of the photo-electric source is analyzed theoretically. The PLZT elements with various sizes are manufactured, and their characteristics are evaluated experimentally from the viewpoint of the application to the photo-electric source. The experimental results show that the PLZT element is applicable to the photo-electric source by optimizing the size of the PLZT element. The control method of the opto-electric source using a PLZT element is proposed, and the conditions being able to control are obtained.
2. We propose two types of linear actuators using ECF. They differ in the respect of the construction of the electrodes. The one has a coil type electrodes, and the other a piston type electrodes.
3. Constructions of functional actuator systems : We develop the linear actuator systems using ERF of ECF, which are the functional fluids. The actuator systmes are controlled by the photo-electric source consisting of a PLZT elelment. As the first step the characteristics of the ER valve which is an important control element in the system are obtained experimentally.
4. Design of functional actuator system : The load-speed cure of the ECF linear actuator is obtained, and it is shown how to design the linear actualtor system using ERF or ECF.
