Research Abstract |
In most metropolitan areas, rapid urbanization has caused uncontrolled sprawl, farmland loss and deteriorated natural characteristics and visual quality. Firstly the study showed relationship between decrease of farmland and increase of urban land uses and related factors. Secondly some case studies using photographs of urban fringe showed the importance of feature of farmland, and spacious order, naturality and peculiarity were extracted as the common factors of urban fringe images. Further more, effect of a few forest types on the preference and the three factors were shown. Thirdly about the consciousness and evaluation of farmland, after the results of semantic differential method and cluster analysis of the factor scores, the four groups of the neighbors which have different attitudes regarding conservation and planning were identified. These are a group having an average consciousness, a group giving a higher priority to farms, a group thinking of farms as recreational use and a group thinks that farms offer food and other uses. It is concluded from the study that land use planners and managers will find it advantageous to identify the degree to which residents perceive multi-functions of farmland and the factors which influence their landscape preference.
