Research Abstract

A kind of boom at the latter term of the Showa era (After 1945) of a Japanese garden in Europe and America was especially confirmed about the evaluation of a Japanese garden in the international community, and an artistic form of the Japanese garden which had been most remarkably evaluated in that case was found. It is a dry landscape garden form, 'Karesansui'.
For instance, after 1950's a lot, the garden of this type was added to the Japanese garden having been made by Europe and America of the beginning of this century. Not only the landscape architect but also the architect and sculptors joined the work of Karesansui. The reason why Karesansui became popular is that even Westerners can easily form the style, and the garden can be easily maintained. Moreover, Karesansui received a good evaluation because it matched modern architecture style, and formed the main image of the Japanese garden since the latter term of the Showa era.
The process evaluated that such a dry landscape garden is international is announced as a thesis to the summary as ' "karesansui" in Modern Landscape Design' (Journal of the JILA, JILA, Vol.61, No.5, 1998. Pp.413-416), and '''Karesansui" as a Vocabulary of Modern Landscape Design' (Art and Landscape, IFLA Central Region Symposium Proceedings, Vol.2,2000. On printing) The author also made a paper on a Japanese garden boom of the United States and Japabnese gardens in the Washington park, Portland, Oregon as a typical case. ('A Study on the Characteristics of Establishing Japanese Gardens in Washington Park, Portland, Oregon', journal of Architeccture, Planning and Environmental Engineering, AIJ, No.521, 1999. Pp.195-202) The author is continuing the research on the evaluation of a Japanese garden in the United States now.
